Activity #3

My slide cast is at

http://phanisweb.webs.com/social%20bookmarking/socialbookmarking.htm

I used articulate application from www.articulate.com to prepare my slidecast. I recordes sound to each slide using record manager in articulate. Then I created a html file of my presentation. Articulate organized files in folders for whole thing. Then I uploaded those folders and html file into my freewebs site, all in same folder. When you open the html file from that folder you can watch the presentation.

I got little problem with my microphone, that is why sound is little bit low in my presentation.

Capabilities of Google calendar, My office on Facebook, ZOHO Project and Yugma.

Google Calendar:

This is a good application from google. This can be very effectively used to organize our events and todo’s. We can invite our friends or collegues to view our calendar. We can also add our friends calendars and plan our schedules. We can change colors for calendars and easily make out any overlaps. We can also have many calendars for ourself like one for school and one for home. This is more like organizing our schedule while being able to share it with others.

Myoffice on Facebook:

Myoffice is a good way of orgaizing our projects. We can invite people to our project and make them a part of it. This helps us to upload files to our projects, so that every one can see. We can post events and tasks with in the project. This is the good way of organizing different kinds of projects in the same place.

ZOHO Projects:

ZOHO is also a  project organizer which got lot more options than in Myofice. Here we can start many projects and share with people. We can post discussions within the forum and we can post tasks and milestones in our project. Here we also have a calendar to schedule out time table. Meetings can also be scheduled here and the progress can be reported. I found this to be a very good one for project.

Yugma:

Yugma is like a online project management tool in which we can share with our invites. Here we have options for chatting and conference call. We can create sessions and record them. We can upload files and share them. We can also record a session. We can give our desktop control to a different uder who we want to share with. This is lot more advanced and can be very useful in real time.

Comparision of facebook, ning, LinkedIn, pownce and friendfeed

March 26, 2008

Facebook:

Facebook is the most popular among the social networking sites. Here we can add friends and get feed on what our friends do.In facebook we can also add many applications and get updated. Here we can easily send messages to friends or a group of friends. The main asset of facebook is we can do so much in an organized manner. We can create groups of different types and organize them . Privacy is also given concern in facebook. And finally we have lot fun here.

Ning:

Ning is the site that provide us to create our own social network and organize it.We can customize it the way we want . Here we can message everyone in our network and outside our network in ning. The recent activity showsup in the main page. Here we can start discussions in the forum and post our blogs. But in ning we need the invitation to join a particular social network. This is one of the most useful free social network site.

Pownce:

Pownce is also a social networking site. Here we can also access our profiles from other sites like facebook, digg etc. We can also import contacts from other networks. We can post a note to all of our friends or a single person either publicly or privately. We can also see the feeds from other sites when we click on link of that site in pownce. We can see all the events posted. This is also a good networking site.

Linkedin:

This the best site to get connected within a organization, company or educational institution. Here we can see all the news about our organization and new contacts that joins our organization. We also get updates in our network on the main page. We can also create group of our intrests or join a group which we like. Linkedin also allows to import or export contacts from or to your outlook or mac mail. Here we have good chances of finding our past colleagues and classmates. This is a good site for one willing to form a network within organization.

Friendfeed:

This a site by which we can get connected to our friends. The name it self says that we get feeded of what our friends do on ther added profiles or networks to friendfeed. Here we can can see all of our bookmarks from our bookmarking sites and feed from our blogs. And also get noted of the messages in our networking site.

My opinion: I prefer facebook for myself because it is more advanced and it is pretty much organized.

Comparison between MS Word2003/2007, Google Docs ,ZOHO writer and Wiki program.

Topics MS Word2003/2007 Google Docs ZOHO Writer Wiki Program
Availability of the formatting choices within these programs It has a number of formatting choices such as: Font, Paragraph, Bullet and Numbering, Boarders and Shading, Text decoration, Change Case (Uppercase, Lowercase, Togglecase,…), Themes of the page, Styles and Formating of paragraph and Reveal formatting are the most common features in MS 2003. In addition there are some other features added in MS 2007 We have different formatting choices in google docs such as Font, Paragraph, Text Decoration, Insert link, images and so on. It also has the common text, page set up and paragraph formatting options. In addition, it has the capability to insert a number of special characters, insert and work in different layer. We can insert html codes also or switch and work in html format or work in the word interface. Furthermore there are digital sign, history, preview document, page view options. We can find and replace a certain word also Wiki Program also has a number of text and paragraph formatting tools. Inserting a link to the word(s). We can insert Image, table also. It has very few formatting features than MS Word or Zoho Writer.
Grammar, spell checking and word count options It has its own built in dictionary that compares the spelling of the word and the structure of the sentence. We can add/remove words in the dictionary. 2007 version is far intelligent in this matter. Yes it has a dictionary in the space of the user’s account in Google server that is use to check spellings but I could not find the grammar checking and suggestions. It has the dictionary saved in our account location of the server. So, We can check the spelling of the word and even get the suggestion like google docs. But I could not find any grammar checking and suggestion in this product. Yes it also has the dictionary and can check the spelling error and suggest accordingly. But I could not fid the grammar checking and suggest opti
Importing the documents from different formats within the document writer program and then exporting these documents to different formats such as .doc, .pdf, .rtf, html etc We can save the document in a number of different formats such as: html/htm, dot (document templet), XML, mhtml, mhtWe can open the above mentioned document formats also in the MS Word
2003 + series.
All the necessary codes for the different file formats are added by the program itself automatically.
We can import the file (upload) upto 500KB in the following formats:HTML files and plain text (.txt).Microsoft Word (.doc), Rich Text (.rtf), OpenDocument Text (.odt) and StarOffice (.sxw).We can export the file in different formats such as: HTML (zipped), Rich Text File (RTF), Word document (doc), Office Document Templet (odt) Pdf or simple test (txt) It supports the following formats for Importing the documents:html, doc, sxw (Open Office) , odt, rtf, jpg, gif, png and text files. And the following for exporting the documents:Docx, sxw, pdf, odf/odt, rtf, html Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat files can be imported. However there are a number of comments on the types of file it supports. So, I found it not to be a robust tool.
Sharing and collaboration of documents within a small group We can share the document by the “Share Workspace” option listed in the menu.Sometimes we may find the convenient way to use the feature “Letters and Mailings” in the Tools option to share the document. We have options to share this document to users enabling them to view, collaborate and administrate the document. We can share the documents Personally or in a group. We can publish/unpublish the document or even we can post the documents to the Blog also. It has the feature to share the document via email also. We can share the documents by using the Forums, emailing the page.
Cost of using these programs We have to purchase this product to use in our personal computer. As the cost of the product, we should pay nothing. We must have a internet connection (Preferably the high speed connection) and a Google docs account registered with any email account. As the cost of the product, We should have a internet connection. However, It has the feature to work offline too with Google Gears download. And we need an account on zoho website. There is no cost of the tools. We can register in the Wiki Program website free of cost and use the tool.
Your personal experience in ease of use, document sharing and collaboration Word is the best one to use if you already have it on your computer. Yor are not needed to be online to to create a document. This is user friendly and have lot of choice. In the case of internet connection available and if I am using a computer without Microsoft word software, I use this product. Since it is some sort of online working tool, there may a number of difficulties arise such as, what happens if the connection fails at the middle of work.Or when saving/opening the documents, or using some other features that needs to populate data from server, it looks slow and may not work for slower connection. This is the best one among the compared online editors. This got  lot of features compared with google doc’s or wetpaint Unlike the Microsoft Word or Zoho writer, It doesn’t have lots of features and facilities. Furthermore I saw a number of comments on importing the files. We can find comments on:http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/AttachmentsSo, I don’t prefer to use this tool.

Unit of learning

March 8, 2008

The unit of learning talks about the client server methodology. A web browser is required to act as a client. Hyper text transfer protocol(HTTP) is used to for communicating between server and client. A Uniform Resource Locater (URL) is used as address for a resource or document. Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) is used to create web pages or documents for world wide web. We can create a web page in HTML by using simple tags. We also learned about google collaborative tools and some websites which enable us to create our website and web pages. This also discuss about the social networking sites such as Face book, My space and orkut. Using these sites we can organize our friends profiles, create groups and communities of specific interest. We can also upload pictures and videos and also manage who you want to look at them. This keeps us in touch with all our friends.
